Amanda Wall
Amanda Wall is a photographer from Woodbridge, New Jersey, and has lived in Baltimore, Maryland, for over a decade. She studied film photography, darkroom processes, and studio lighting at Goucher College before establishing her practice in Baltimore. Wall has collaborated with local filmmakers, musicians, and artists to document their work and is deeply engaged with the city and its creative communities. Her photographic practice has historically centered on 35mm and medium-format black-and-white film, though she is increasingly exploring color and digital photography. After making work less frequently between 2016 and 2022, she has returned to a consistent practice rooted in her Baltimore community.
Wall describes herself as a portrait, environmental, and narrative photographer, drawing inspiration from both classic and contemporary approaches to portraiture and constructed landscapes. She photographs the people and environments around her, including artists, collectors, scholars, skaters, and gardeners, as well as spaces, and alleys throughout Baltimore. Her images examine the relationship between people and the places they inhabit, often transforming familiar surroundings into unfamiliar or newly imagined realities. Working with the camera as both an observational and interpretive tool, Wall is interested in the process of recording light and constructing images that exist somewhere between documentation and invention. Her practice reflects an intimate relationship with Baltimore, using the city’s people, architecture, and overlooked spaces as material for narratives that are both personal and imaginative.
