Bella Bailey

Bella Bailey is a transdisciplinary artist from Akron, Ohio. She studied painting and metalsmithing at the University of Akron before moving to Baltimore, Maryland, where she earned her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Working across sculpture, installation, and process-based practices, Bailey explores relationships between natural systems, human behavior, and the built environment.

Bailey’s practice investigates the cyclical and emergent behavior of the universe through nested systems and material processes. She orchestrates specific conditions that generate information, which then becomes a component within subsequent processes. Heat, chemical reactions, crystallization, and soil displacement produce micropatterns, unstable formations, and temporary microecologies that reflect the generative forces of nature. Often paired with found objects, these materials examine humanity through its peripheral and ecological residue. Bailey considers found objects as stand-ins for people, carrying histories of labor, play, and alienation, while containers, frames, vessels, and terrariums function as archival tools and reliquaries. By containing and preserving materials that would otherwise decay, her work questions what, and whose histories, are deemed worthy of preservation. In this tension between geological time and the impermanence of the built world, Bailey considers ecological entanglement, class disparity, and the lingering residue of human activity.
