Ethan Hoskins
Ethan Hoskins a multidisciplinary artist from Baltimore, Maryland. He received his BA from Brown University and his BFA from RISD as part of their Brown RISD Dual Degree program. Hoskins currently lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland.
His practice is a means of discovery. Each painting for him is a puzzle starting with pieces—ideas, images, feelings—and his task is to assemble these pieces in a layered way that reveals itself with time. He is interested in underlying connections between material, image, and language, and how context can shape perception and meaning. His piece “you” is an investigation of the metamodern disposition that has become central to his sensibility—holding two, sometimes competing, reactions at once. By pairing a cropped image of Caravaggio’s “The Calling of Saint Matthew” with a stock image meme reaction, he connects two gestures with vastly different contexts. It’s a joke. It’s a question. It’s a choice as to whether or not to accept destiny.
