J Jaffery

J Jaffery is a visual artist and filmmaker living in Hyattsville, Maryland. Formally trained in filmmaking, his artistic practice extends cinematic techniques—particularly montage editing—into assemblage, collage, photography, videography, artist multiples, and performance. His multidisciplinary approach has been shaped by his experiences with autism and ADHD, as well as by his involvement in the downtown New York performance art community during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Jaffery’s practice centers on the concepts of nonlinearity and the distinction between representation and lived experience, drawing particularly from Alfred Korzybski’s Map-Territory relation, Zen Buddhism, and Jungian psychology. He approaches film as an inherently linear medium whose deconstruction and translation into other forms can offer a metaphor for a world experienced as interconnected, circuitous, and nonlinear. Through the accumulation and recombination of drawings, photographs, film and video clips, collages, and found imagery, Jaffery constructs unexpected narratives that resist straightforward causality. His process balances conceptual frameworks with intuition, allowing the unconscious to guide relationships between disparate materials. Often incorporating ephemera and a distinctive graphic sensibility, his work blurs the boundaries between artwork and documentation, representation and experience, inviting viewers to consider the difference between the maps we construct of reality and reality itself.
