Tim Jankowiak

Tim Jankowiak grew up around Chicago and has since lived across all four continental U.S. time zones, making Baltimore home in 2014. His first passion was philosophy, which became his primary career as a professor at Towson University. During graduate school, however, Jankowiak began painting as a counterbalance to the abstraction of philosophical study. What began as a creative outlet developed into a lifelong commitment to oil painting, and after more than a decade of refining his technical skills and visual language, he began exhibiting his work publicly in 2024.

A self-taught painter, Jankowiak employs a meticulous, highly detailed approach to oil painting, using very small brushes and numerous translucent layers to create complex optical effects, textures, and luminosity. His subject matter ranges from urban landscapes and portraits to figurative works and still lifes, often exploring themes of time, memory, beauty, mortality, and connection. Urban scenes without figures evoke the traces left by human presence, while still lifes engage traditions of memento mori and the impermanence of life. Recent paintings of houseplants consider the tension between individuality and interconnectedness, using pots as metaphors for the boundaries of the self. Across these varied subjects, vibrant color and heightened saturation serve as a unifying language. By intensifying the luminosity of the world around him, Jankowiak offers an optimistic, almost utopian way of seeing: imagining not necessarily how the world looks, but how it might look if everything were allowed to glow with its own inner radiance.
